Preserve our post office mural

Dear Editor:

Milford Zornes, world-famous Claremont artist who died in January at the age of 100, painted the mural in Claremont’s new post office in 1937.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs paid to construct the post office and beautify it with Milford’s mural.

To prevent future demolition of the post office and mural, Claremont Heritage is donating time and expertise to prepare the application to classify them as a national historic landmark.

This effort was initiated by Ivan Light, who contacted the Postal Service in Washington and obtained a favorable response to the proposal.

The Democratic Club will pay for the required photographs, which will cost $400.  We would appreciate donations to defray this expense; mark your check “Mural.”  Any donations in excess of $400 will be used to publicize the mural, not to fund the club.

Please support this good cause—for the preservation of history, art and architecture, for the beauty of Claremont, and for recognition of the widespread contributions which the government made to American art and infrastructure during the Great Depression.
