No shouting at protest

Dear Editor:

As one who participated in the peace vigil at Indian Hill and Arrow commemorating the fifth anniversary of the War in Iraq, I would like to thank you for the thorough report and photographs of that event in the March 22 issue.  Just one thing I couldn’t understand, and that was why you used the phrase, “Protesters Shout….” in the headline, when there was no shouting whatsoever at that event.

The peace group who stands at that corner regularly on Friday afternoons has sometimes been accused of being a gang of raucous radicals, but as one who frequently joins that group, I can witness to the fact that I have never heard shouting or seen rude behavior at that event.  We patiently stand there and wave to passing cars as a cry of lament over the devastation caused by war.

I often carry the sign, “What are you doing?”  We hope to give encouragement to all in our community to find the will and the way to shift our nation’s energy and resources from destructive militarism and war to constructive diplomacy and peace-making.

Starry-eyed idealism?  Maybe.  But how about giving it a try?—in the name of the Prince of Peace.
