Robert G. McCullough
Engineer, volunteer

At age 96, Mt. San Antonio Gardens resident Robert G. McCullough died on February 10, 2009 at the senior community’s Health Center.

Born in Massachusetts and raised mainly in Worcester, Mr. McCullough grew up during the Depression and underwent a number of trying times with his family.  He worked a variety of jobs during and after high school, looking for work wherever he could.

“It was pretty slim,” said his wife of 5 years, Dorothy McCullough.

Mr. McCullough’s first career position was with US Steel as an engineer. He started in Connecticut, was transferred to the San Francisco area and, finally, to Los Angeles. With the exception of a 3-year interruption during which he served in the Army Air Corps (now the Army Air Force), he remained with this company until retiring as its chief estimator in 1969.

Coming from a lifetime of hard work, retirement did not satisfy Mr. McCullough. Therefore, when the Ralph M. Parsons Company in Pasadena offered him a job one week after he retired, he immediately accepted. He remained there for 13 years before retiring a second time in 1982 as the company’s chief cost engineer.

Mr. McCullough enjoyed volunteer work, especially with the American Red Cross where he did “whatever was needed,” said Ms. McCullough. He also sampled new fields by taking a variety of fun courses at Rio Hondo Community College. He also enjoyed lawn bowling and was involved in the Pomona-based club.

For 42 years, Mr. McCullough and his first wife lived in Whittier. There, he served an elder at the East Whittier Presbyterian Church. In 1997, they moved to Mt. San Antonio Gardens where his first wife predeceased him.

At MSAG, Mr. McCullough accepted responsibility for developing and maintaining a beautiful cutting garden for the residents. He oversaw this garden for 10 years and served the senior community in many other ways as well.

There, he also found love again, marrying for the second time at age 91.

“He was such a good looking man,” said Ms. McCullough, “he looked a good 10 years younger than his age.”

He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy McCullough, and by other loving family members.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Claremont Presbyterian Church, where Mr. McCullough had been a member.

Memorial donations may be made to the Homeship Fund, Mt. San Antonio Gardens, 900 E. Harrison, Pomona, CA 91767.
