Glen Mabey
Metalworker, outdoorsman

Glen Lee Mabey, a Claremont resident since 1977, died on March 15, 2008 at Community Extended Care in Montclair. He was 66.

Born in Monterey Park on January 10, 1942, Mr. Mabey grew up in Montebello and remained a California resident his entire life. In 1964, he married Shirley Sabol. Together, they settled in Valinda and brought two children, a son and a daughter, into the family.  In 1977, seeking a better neighborhood for their children, they moved to Claremont.

Professionally, Mr. Mabey was a precision metalworker, toolmaker and plastic injection mold maker. In 1967, he was awarded California State Champion by the State of California Tool and Die Association. He was also granted local champion status in Los Angeles in the same competition.

Mr. Mabey continued to work in this field until he was disabled by a severe head injury as a result of an automobile collision in 1983, which was caused by a college student driving under the influence of alcohol. This traumatic accident changed his life dramatically. For a time, the search for proper medication made it difficult for Mr. Mabey to function independently: life was rough for a period. Trial and error eventually made it possible for him to resume life in a manner that more closely resembled life before the injury.

An outdoorsman, Mr. Mabey loved boating, camping, waterskiing, snow skiing, fishing, hiking and generally just spending time in nature. He also valued and enjoyed spending time with his family, who shared that he had a great sense of humor.

Mr. Mabey is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Mabey of Claremont; by his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Maria Mabey of Corona; by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Spencer Owens; and by his grandchildren, Janelle and Jessica Mabey and Spencer and Connor Owens.

Per Mr. Mabey’s wish, he was cremated and his ashes will be cast into the sea from the Nautilus at Newport Landing, Newport Beach. The boat will depart at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2008.
