A week of good news for CHS boys golf Whether it is on the greens or off, there has been a lot of good things going on with the Wolfpack varsity boys golf team as of late. On the greens, the squad qualified for the CIF Divisional Championships to be held on Monday in Yucaipa and Daniel Beck qualified for the CIF individual regionals. Beck, who has been a consistent medalist for Claremont all season long, was not only named the Baseline League champion after the Baseline Finals on Wednesday but also was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player and named to the Baseline League’s All-League First Team. His score of 78 on a windy day at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills sealed the league win. While Tyler Gilson and Brett Giannos qualified for the Baseline League Finals after preliminary scores of 79 and 84 respectively, the two did not qualify for CIF. Yet it was a good season for Gilson and Giannos as Gilson was named to the Baseline League’s All-League Second Team and Giannos was selected as an Honorable Mention. “Despite the injuries that we’ve had this season, we’ve done what we set out to do and we’re real excited about how we did this year,” said CHS boys golf coach Stu Gornbein. On Tuesday, the Wolfpack was recognized at Angels Stadium for winning the CIF Southern Section Academic Championship in boys golf. Results of the CHS boys golf team’s fray into the CIF round will be included in the next edition of Sporting Life.
Singles and doubles on the way to CIF It has been a year of domination for the Claremont varsity boys tennis team was the Wolfpack having gone through the Baseline League undefeated with a 10-0 league record. The Baseline League Finals on Wednesday at the Upland Tennis Club gave CHS another chance to shine among its league foes and once again, the final battle came down to sophomore Clarke Spinosa and Torsten Keil-Long. For the second straight year, it was Spinosa who bested Keil-Long to go through the entire season undefeated in league matches. But both Spinosa and Keil-Long will move on to the CIF round. In doubles play, the duos of Steve Hwan-Scott Donaldson and Trevor James-Andrew Lieu also qualified for CIF with the Hwan-Donaldson combination taking second overall in the Baseline League finals. The CIF team preliminaries are set to take place next week with the individual sectionals to be held on May 16.
At last! CHS boys volleyball captures league crown After a decade-long history of only being able to be recognized as a co-champion of the Pacific League on 3 occasions, the year 2008 has proven to be a year of new breakthroughs for the Claremont boys volleyball squad. Victories over Arcadia and Burroughs (Burbank) has given the Wolfpack (25-4, 12-0) something that it has long desired—sole possession of the Pacific League Championship. “We are very excited and we are looking forward to the playoffs,” said CHS boys volleyball coach Bernie Wendling. “It’s been great fun this season.” April 24’s showdown with last year’s Pacific League co-champion Arcadia was a major contest for Claremont, with both teams having shared the 2007 crown. Yet the determination of the Pack before its home crowd overpowered Arcadia as CHS defeated the Apaches in 4 games, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. Keith Rossman (13), Andrew Zetterberg (12) and Geoff Powell (10) all recorded at least 10 kills apiece. Allo Tauaese totaled 38 assists. The Wolfpack was even more aggressive against Burroughs, sweeping the Indians in just 3 games, 25-19, 25-9, 25-19. Rossman once again led Claremont with 11 kills while Patrick Stalwick and Kyle Messner contributed 7 and 6 successful spikes respectively.
