Two arrested for trying to break into smoke shop

Police arrested two people on Christmas morning on suspicion of trying to break into a smoke shop.

Around 4:40 a.m., an officer noticed a silver Dodge Charger with paper plates in the PepperTree Square parking lot, police said in a release. As the officer approached, the Charger left south on Indian Hill Boulevard.

The officer pulled the car over, and a search revealed two sets of oversized bolt cutters, pry bars, torches and butane tanks and a grocery bag full of cigarettes, police said. A black bag was found behind a pillar at Smokeology in Pepper Tree Square that contained a large torch.

Police determined that the two men in the car, 20-year-old Joaquin Gonzalez of Anaheim and 31-year-old Cain Ramirez of Pomona, tried to burglarize the smoke shop but fled when the officer showed up.

Police also said that the bag of cigarettes was obtained from a burglary in Chino.

Mr. Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property and driving without a license. Mr. Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.
