Fire in the hills above Claremont

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a house fire in Live Oak Canyon Monday evening. The fire was first reported around 6:34 p.m. at a home on the 4500 block of Live Oak Canyon Road, Sgt. Peter Shupe of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The fire is believed to have started in the detached garage of the home, and spread to the main house, Sgt. Shupe said. Nearby brush that was ignited by the fire was extinguished as of 7:45 p.m.

Both structures were burned to the ground, he said, and the damage is estimated to be around $700,000.

Smoke from the fire could be seen across the region, and the fire prompted evacuations of both Live Oak and Webb canyons.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Sgt. Shupe said.
