Tuesday, March 13

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at Western Christian School on suspicion of making criminal threats. The boy reportedly made a post on social media that another student perceived as a threat, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department. No further information was available about the content of the post, but police arrested him at the school around 8 a.m. He was booked and released with a citation to his parents. An investigation is ongoing.

Police are investigating an attempted break-in at J. Brown Violin Maker in the Village. Between Monday, March 12 at 5 p.m. and March 13 at noon, an unknown suspect smashed an east window to the building, but did not make entry. There was nothing stolen from the shop, but it cost $300 to replace the window. Anyone with information should call the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.

Police arrived to the Claremont University Consortium at 101 S. Mills Ave. around 5:15 p.m., where Campus Safety had detained 24-year- old Angel Matu-Olivares of Ontario on suspicion of checking door handles on cars in the Colleges. While there was no evidence of theft, Mr. Matu-Olivares told police he had methamphetamine in his sock, Lt. Walters said. He was arrested for possession of drugs, booked and released with a citation.

Around 6:15 p.m., a homeowner on the 2200 block of Edinboro Court heard a knock at the door but did not answer. She then heard a burglar enter her home and eventually, the master bedroom, where the victim was located. The victim screamed, and the burglar immediately took off, leaving the house and getting away in an unknown vehicle. Nothing was taken from the house, and the only suspect description was that they wore a grey-colored raincoat. Anyone with information should call the Claremont Police Department.

 

Wednesday, March 14

Police were called to the Harwood Court residence hall at the Colleges around 5:20 a.m. after witnesses saw two men trying to steal a locked bike from the rack at 170 E. Bonita Ave. Once police arrived, the two men fled, but 41-year-old Frank Giglio of Ontario was caught. The second suspect escaped, and he is described as a Caucasian man in his 30s, five feet, eight inches tall and  weighing 185 pounds with black hair. Mr. Giglio was arrested for trespassing and possession of burglary tools.

Police arrested a San Bernardino man after he tried to steal a tablet from a Verizon Wireless store. Around 5:40 p.m., Tymr Abdullah, 41, allegedly asked to see the tablet at the store on 420 Auto Center Drive. Once the employee handed Mr. Abdullah the tablet, he ran off with it, Lt. Walters said. He was located by police a short distance from the store, arrested for shoplifting and sent to CPD jail. The tablet, valued at $300, was recovered.

 

Thursday, March 15

Police are investigating a months-long scam that bilked a woman out of tens of thousands of dollars. It all started in May 2017 when the victim, who lives on the 100 block of Marywood, received an email stating she had been approved for a $100,000 grant, but needed to send money through Moneygram or Western Union in order to claim the prize. Over the next six months, the woman reportedly sent $14,000 to the scammer, Lt. Walters said. The scam wasn’t reported until March 15. Police are currently investigating.

Angel Matu-Olivares, who had been arrested just days prior on a drug possession charge, was arrested again after police found a meth pipe during a traffic stop. Police pulled over an Infiniti driven by Mr. Matu-Olivares at Mills and Foothill around 9:30 p.m., Lt. Walters said. In addition to the meth pipe on Mr. Matu-Olivares, a passenger in the car, 26-year-old Heather Warner of Pomona, was in possession of a meth pipe and a hypodermic needle in her purse. Both were arrested and transported to CPD jail.

 

Friday, March 16

Police are investigating a burglary at a home on the 2300 block of Bonnie Brae. Between 5 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., burglars shattered a sliding glass door and entered the home, ransacking the place and leaving with an unknown amount of property, Lt. Walters said. There is no suspect information.

Police believe someone tried to break into a home on the 3100 block of Montana. Between 3:30 p.m. and 6:40 p.m., someone smashed two windows at the house, but did not make entry. No property was lost, and police are investigating.

 

Sunday, March 18

Two men were arrested on drug charges as they walked near Foothill Boulevard and Monte Vista Avenue. Police conducted an enforcement stop on 38-year-old William Dunn and 58-year-old Robert Bainbridge as they walked around 1:30 a.m., Lt. Walters said. Mr. Dunn was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine and a pipe and Mr. Bainbridge was in possession of a pipe and had warrants for his arrest. Both men were taken into custody and transported to jail.

A Chino man was arrested for grand theft auto after getting caught by license plate reader cameras. Police pulled over a car driven by 35-year-old Kevin Truong in front of Buca di Beppo on the 500 block of Foothill Boulevard around 3:30 p.m. According to Lt. Walters, Mr. Truong told police he claimed the car was his, and that he “found it and believed he could drive it.” Mr. Truong was arrested and transported to CPD jail.

 

Monday, March 19

Police arrested 27-year-old Robert Castro after a resident claimed he was hanging out in their backyard. The homeowner on the 300 block of west Radcliffe Drive called police around 7:50 a.m. to report that a Hispanic man with a tattoo on his neck was leaving their yard, Lt. Walters said. Police found Mr. Castro near the intersection of Indian Hill and Radcliffe, but he took off, eventually getting caught just before the 210 overpass. An investigation revealed Mr. Castro was currently on parole for assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested for prowling and resisting arrest.
