CHS football team gears up for season opener
The Claremont High School football team is getting ready for the beginning of the 2014 season, which begins next week with a scrimmage at CHS.
“We have a tough team and they have been bonding well,” said Coach Collins. The team has taken a different approach leading up to the season including attending sports camps to work on their speed.
“The team has been working hard and that is all I can ask,” he said.
Leading Claremont’s offense will be 6-foot, 169-pound senior Ryan O’Connor, who takes over as quarterback. He has been doing very well in passing tournaments during the off-season, according to Coach Collins, and is also one of the team’s captains.
Other standouts on the offensive team include captains 5-foot-8, 133-pound wide receiver Jordan Goodrich and tight end Parker Bowman, who stands 6-foot 2-inches tall and weighs 194-pounds. Another player to watch is 6-foot, 200-pound fullback Markelle Davis.
The cornerstone of the defensive line is a recent transfer student from Upland, Perun Em, who is 6-foot-one and weighs in at 290 pounds. Coach Collins has been very impressed with his performance during practice and predicts that he will be one of the top defensive players in the league. Also very strong are captain, 5-foot 8-inch, 175-pound linebacker James Stephens and 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback Mato Pacheco.
The first chance to catch the Wolfpack in action will be next Friday, August 22, at 7 p.m. when Claremont takes on Don Lugo High School at home.
