Former CHS goalie wins big at next level

Former Claremont resident Sydney Fortson, a sophomore at the United States Naval Academy, has been named to the 2017 Women’s Soccer Academic All-Patriot League Team.

A 2016 graduate of Claremont High School, Fortson played goalkeeper for the Pack when CHS made it to the second round of the CIF tournament, where Fortson had a shutout. Unfortunately, the Pack lost to San Luis Obispo on penalty kicks.

Nominated and selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the first time in her career, Fortson has been successful both on and off the field, according to a USNA news release.

As starting goalkeeper, she played in all 19 games for the Mids in 2017 and led the team to a league-high 12 shutouts. Individually, she’s been credited with eight solo shutouts.

In league-play, Fortson had just a 0.33 goals against average and .897 save percentage, while posting an 8-0-1 record. She’s been in net for the majority of the Mids’ two lengthy shutout streaks and was rewarded on Monday with the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Award.

Teammate senior midfielder Meghan Hegarty also was named to the All Patriot League Team.

Fortson, an aerospace engineering major with a 3.80 GPA, was named to both the Superintendant’s and Dean’s list in each of her first two semesters. She stands 48th in the overall order of merit ranks at the Naval Academy and second in the military order of merit.

Navy lost to Bucknell, 3-2, in the Patriot League finals in Annapolis Maryland on Sunday.
