Coles leads Pack to third consecutive state title

The Claremont High School girls cross country team won its third-straight CIF Division Two California State title on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, according to a news release from the CHS athletics.

The Pack scored 82 points to edge out Granada, 95 points, and Mission Viejo, 136 points, out of field of 24 teams. Claremont joins Saugus as the only division two team in history to win at least three titles in a row.

Maddie Coles had another remarkable run claiming a second place individual title just 22 seconds behind the winner senior Kristin Fahy of La Costa Canyon. The freshman sensation ran 17:44.8 over the rolling dirt 3.1 mile course.

Behind Coles were junior Azalea Segura-Mora, 14th at 18:13.1, senior Sydney Hwang, 20th at 18:18.6, senior Kalinda Reynolds, 26th at 18:29.6 and senior Julia Marriott, 42nd at 18:44.8.

Because of the strength of the team and the California State Meet win, the girls will compete in the Nike Cross Country Nationals this coming Saturday, December 1 in Portland, Oregon. Claremont finished ninth in last year’s NXN meet.
