CHS girls soccer loses in defensive battle 1-0
Junior CHS goalkeeper Gianna Bonnett was unable to save the winning strike from La Mirada defender Emma Viayra (not pictured) on Saturday, May 22, during the Wolfpack’s CIF Southern Section semi-final game. The match was as even as could be—both physically and tactically—with both teams struggling to create any sort of scoring opportunity in either half. But eventually one team was going to score and unfortunately, that was La Mirada, who won the game 1-0.
As the semi-final game went into extra time, it was apparent both teams were worn out even before the whistle began the period. The first period of extra time saw both teams put shots on target; however, as the keepers made great saves, keeping the score even 0-0.
Finally, deep into the second half of extra time, La Mirada senior defender Emma Viayra scored the golden goal to knock CHS out of the tournament. After CHS cleared a ball, a La Mirada defender was soon able to hit a wonder-strike past goalkeeper Gianna Bonnett, winning the game for La Mirada with 2:39 left to play.
