It’s not a terribly long drive from Claremont to Los Angeles. But Claremont native Kurt Pitzer has taken what might be called the long road home.
A writer and independent film producer, among other endeavors, Mr. Pitzer and his wife, Kimberly Levin, a writer and director, are returning to California from their Brooklyn, New York base, with their film Runoff, chosen as one of the films in this year’s LA Film Fest, a showcase of independent films that takes place from June 11 through June 19. Both hope that they may see some Claremonters at the film’s showings on June 12 and June 15 at the Regal Cinema Theaters.
Claremont High School Theatre presents "Shrek The Musical." Join our unlikely hero and his loyal steed Donkey as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing, lovesick dragon. Add the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got the biggest, brightest musical comedy around. Showtimes are May 30 at 7:30 p.m. and May 31 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at Bridges Auditorium.
“Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous: Chinese Luxury Goods of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” is on exhibition through August 24. Drawing on the Petterson Museum’s extensive collection of Chinese art and artifacts, they will highlight prestige items used by the nobility and wealthy civil servants during China’s last two dynasties, spanning the years between 1368-1912. The exhibit will include silk robes, jewelry and costume accessories, paintings, ivory, ceramic, lacquer and metal artifacts once used by the ruling elite of China.

With a wide array of musical venues and the annual Folk Music Festival coming up next weekend, Claremont is known as a cultural oasis. It’s not every day, however, that the town plays host to a New Wave legend.
The band Berlin will be giving a free performance at Rhino Records on Saturday, May 30 at 1 p.m. The electro-pop quartet is appearing in support of their latest album, “Animal,” which they released this past September, some 27 years after “Take My Breath Away” graced the “Top Gun” soundtrack and topped the charts.

Claremont Heritage presents a closing reception for “Underwood & Underwood–Intersection: The Art and Architecture of Martha and S. David Underwood.” A silent auction will be held featuring original artwork, giclees and lithographs by Martha Underwood and other Claremont artists to benefit Claremont Heritage educational programs.
